Sask. government announces support for families with children in need of out-of-province care

The Government of Saskatchewan has announced a new initiative to offer financial assistance to families requiring medical care for their children outside of the province.

Effective retroactively, starting on April 1, the province will reimburse transportation and accommodation expenses for pediatric patients aged 16 and younger, as well as caregivers.

“We understand the challenges families can face when they have a sick child, particularly those who are also having to deal with travel accessing specialized care outside of the province,” stated Health Minister Everett Hindley. “That’s why we are taking steps today to reduce the financial burden for families so they can focus on their healing journey for their child.”

To qualify for financial assistance, families must obtain prior approval from the Ministry of Health before travelling. The treatment sought must be medically necessary and not available within Saskatchewan.

Additionally, the specialist physician or surgeon applying for prior approval must specify the expected length of stay required for treatment.

Covered expenses include transportation costs by airline or car, accommodation expenses such as hotels or stays with family members, and meals, up to a maximum of $2,000 per trip.
