Ahtahkakoop Cree Nation Man Fatally Shot in Standoff with RCMP, Officer Injured

An officer-involved shooting on Ahtahkakoop Cree Nation has left a man dead and an RCMP officer injured. The Saskatchewan RCMP responded to an assault report around 7 p.m. on Sunday evening. When officers arrived, a confrontation ensued, forcing them to seek cover as the man fled inside a residence with two adults and two children.

The RCMP reported that during the police response, a firearm was discharged, fatally injuring the man. Despite life-saving measures by officers, he was pronounced dead at the scene by paramedics. His family has been notified of the tragic loss. The nature of the confrontation leading to the shooting remains unclear, as officers worked to contain the scene while awaiting backup.

The officer involved is receiving medical treatment for non-life-threatening injuries, though RCMP have not specified how the injuries were sustained. Saskatchewan’s Serious Incident Response Team , a civilian-led body that investigates incidents involving police actions, is now overseeing the investigation.
