This is the time of year when bears are eating heavily and gaining substantial weight in preparation for hibernation. The annual Fat Bear Week competition in Katmai National Park in Alaska is back for another year. Viewers from around the world can vote on which bear they believe has gained the most weight this summer and fall.
There are 11 bears in the competition this year including Chunk, 151 Walker, and last year’s winner, 128 Grazer. These grizzly bears gorge themselves on salmon and other rich foods (but not cheesecake) to gain as much weight as they can to survive the long hibernation period. During their long winter sleep a bear can lose as much as a third of their body weight, so it’s very important they they eat a lot. On average, an adult male bear can weigh up 408kg in the summer, but by the time hibernation approaches they can weigh over 540 kilograms. Of course, not all the bears in this competition are males. 128 Grazer is a strong mother bear who, sadly, lost one of her cubs in a fight with another bear earlier this year. She took the crown back to her den last year.
In addition to voting on large bears in Alaska, it’s also an opportunity to learn more about these massive animals, what they eat, how they’re protected, and give people a chance to view them safely online while they’re in their natural habitat.
