Today, We Commemorate Holocaust Memorial Day on the 80th anniversary of the liberation

The 80th anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz by Soviet troops is being marked today at the site of the former death camp, a ceremony that is widely being treated as the last major observance that any notable number of survivors will be able to attend.

On this day in 1945, Auschwitz-Birkenau, the largest Nazi concentration and extermination camp, was liberated. Approximately 1.1 million men, women and children were murdered at Auschwitz-Birkenau, and over 90% of them were Jewish. In all, the Germans murdered 6 million Jews from all over Europe, annihilating two-thirds of Europe’s Jews and one-third of all Jews worldwide.

The Holocaust threatened the fabric of civilization, and the world said never again.

Holocaust Memorial Day is a time to come together to remember all those affected by the Holocaust, and to take action to protect those currently at risk of persecution. From educating ourselves to better understand those who we perceive as different, to reporting hate crime if we see it, there are actions we can and must take to make our communities safer. The greatest crime in history is not violence, it is silence. Silence helped the Nazis kill millions of Jews. Never be indifferent.
