Most of February has been incredibly cold for Saskatchewanians thanks to a polar vortex that has made itself at home over the prairies. This past Monday set new record temperatures for both Regina and Saskatoon, among other communities in the province. According to Environment Canada, Regina dropped to -40.4 degrees Celsius on February 17th, breaking a 1927 record of -38.9. Meanwhile in Saskatoon, the -40 record set in 1903 was broke when the mercury plummeted to -40.6 degrees Celsius on Monday.
The good news is that Saskatchewanians will start to feel warmer temperatures by Friday, which will be welcomed by all after this extremely cold stretch. As with most winters on the prairies, the wind was a major factor in making it feel much colder than it actually was. This past Wednesday morning saw wind chill values reach -50.
