There are many ways to celebrate a milestone birthday in one’s life. Some choose to go on a big trip for their birthday, others want to go skydiving or take a hot air balloon ride, and some view their birthday as just another day.
104-year-old Loretta Chamberlain of New York state wanted to celebrate her birthday in the most peculiar way – by going to jail. She always wanted to see the inside of the local jail because it’s a place she has never seen before, so the Geneseo, NY county jail granted her birthday wish.
The 104-year-old was fingerprinted, her mug shot was taken, and they briefly locked her in a prison cell. Afterwards, she was released from the cell and was treated to cake, coffee, and even a visit by police dog before heading back to her care home.
According to the local Sherriff, her secret to longevity is to “mind your business.”
One of the fastest growing demographics in Canada are centenarians, where the numbers have tripled between 2000 and 2023. As of June 2024, there were nearly 12 thousand people age 100 or older and nearly 84 thousand in the United States. Centenarian numbers worldwide are not definitively known, but the United Nation estimates there are approximately 935,000 around the globe.
