One day after The Weather Network released their summer forecast indicating hot and dry conditions, a heat warning has been issued for the Lloydminster area of the province.
According to the weather office a heat warning is issued when temperatures can pose significant personal risks such as heat exhaustion or heat stroke. Temperatures in the Lloydminster region are expected to reach and exceed 30 degrees Celsius today, but a cool front is expected to move in later today bringing some relief to residents.
If the Weather Network’s summer forecast is any indication, Saskatchewanians will be seeing many more of these heat warnings this summer thanks to a “heat dome” positioned over the US Midwest and the southern Canadian prairies. In 2021 the “heat dome” sent the mercury soaring across the province and sparked fears of a drought.
Environment Canada has compiled a list of precautions Saskatchewanians should take when under a heat warning. This include:
– Consider rescheduling outdoor activities to cooler hours of the day.
– Take frequent breaks from the heat, spending time in cooled indoor spaces where possible.
– Drink plenty of water and other non-alcoholic, non-caffeinated beverages to stay hydrated.
– Check for your children or pets before you exit your vehicle. Do not leave any person or pet inside a closed vehicle, for any length of time.
