As firefighters do battle with raging wildfires in northern Saskatchewan, residents are dealing with poor air quality thanks to the smoke. A number of air quality warnings and statements have been issued by Environment Canada.
Warnings are in effect for the Hudson Bay, Cumberland House, Creighton, Deschambault Lake, Pelican Narrows, Molanosa, Weyakwin, La Ronge, Air Ronge, Stanley Mission, and Cree Lake areas. According to the weather agency, air quality and wildfire smoke can fluctuate over short distances and vary considerably throughout the day. Environment Canada says common symptoms of poor air quality include eye, nose, and throat irritation, headaches or mild cough, wheezing, and chest pains. For those who feel they’re having a medical emergency they should seek medical attention.
Environment Canada recommends those who work outdoors, those who are pregnant, 65 and older, and young children should limit their time outside during the smoky conditions.
An air quality statement has been issued for La Loche, Prince Albert, Beauval, Meadow Lake, North Battleford, Wilkie, Melfort, Tisdale, Nipawin, and Roshern areas.
