As the first day of summer arrives in Canada, many in Saskatchewan and Alberta will be staying indoors out of the rain. Meteorologists are forecasting significant rainfall for residents along the Rocky Mountain foothills and as far east as the Saskatchewan/Manitoba border.
According to weather experts at the Weather Network, a deep upper-level trough will move across the Rockies bringing with it 100 to 150mm of moisture in the Calgary and Lethbridge areas. The Brooks, Medicine Hat, Swift Current, Leader, and Kindersley regions could see rainfall amounts of 50-75mm of rain while residents in the Moose Jaw, Regina, Weyburn, Estevan, and Yorkton areas may see smaller totals of 30 to 50mm.
The Weather Network says this system is expected to start on Friday in Alberta before intensifying late Friday evening and early Saturday morning while moving eastward. In addition to rainy weather, Meteorologists are also predicting that strong, gusty winds may accompany the weather system along with the risk of localized flooding, particularly in Alberta.
West-Central Saskatchewan producers will benefit the most from this rainfall due to drought-like weather in recent years. Rainfall in June is especially important for both grain farmers and livestock producers to spur the growth of crops and hay early in their development.
