They make look cute, they may sound cute, and they may act cute, but gophers can be incredibly destructive to farmers and to the land. Throughout Saskatchewan’s agriculture history, farmers have been battling gophers and other pests in attempts to grow bumper grain and hay crops. Now the Saskatchewan Wildlife Federation (SWF) is offering assistance.
In a press release, the Saskatchewan Wildlife Federation says they’re partnering with the Saskatchewan Association of Rural Municipalities (SARM) to help producers in the battle against gophers. For those who are dealing with the rodents this summer, SWF says farmers can call their office where they will be connected to local SWF members who can deal with gophers in a responsible and ethical way. No exact details were provided as to how they will be dealt with, but emphasized it would be ethical.
In the news release, SWF Executive Director Darrell Crabbe says they recognize the growing frustration gophers are causing in rural areas, particularly as they damage crops and create hazards for livestock.
The Saskatchewan Wildlife Federation is a non-profit and non-government organization dedicated to the conservation of wildlife in the province. The organization, based in Moose Jaw, has 121 branch offices spread throughout Saskatchewan and is home to approximately 32,000 members.
Farmers wanting to learn more about gopher control can call the SWF office at 306-692-8812.
