Firefighters across Saskatchewan, Canada, and the world have been busy battling wildfires across the prairie provinces this summer which has resulted in significant smoke being pushed towards southern Saskatchewan and into the US causing air quality issues for many areas.
Today, air quality warnings have been issued for Regina, Moose Jaw, Swift Current, Kindersley/Rosetown, Battlefords, Saskatoon, Prince Albert, Hudson Bay, and Wynyard areas. As of Tuesday morning the air quality index was listed at 10 in Saskatoon, which is the highest on the scale, while Regina’s air quality has reached a 7.
The severity of smoke conditions will vary from hour to hour and experts recommend people should limit their time outdoors. Common symptoms of being outside in smoky air for long periods of time include headaches, a mild cough, and eye, nose, and throat irritation. Those over the age of 65, pregnant mothers, young children, and those with other health conditions are most impacted by poor air quality.
