The English language is one that is frequently changing and dictionaries are constantly studying and evaluating which new words, or variations of old words, should be added. Every year thousands of words are considered for the dictionary, but according to Colin McIntosh, Lexical Program Manager at Cambridge Dictionary, they only add words that they think will have staying power.
Among the new words added this year is “skibidi,” which is a slang term meaning cool or bad. “Lewk” has also been added to the Cambridge Online Dictionary, which is a twist on the word “look,” meaning something eye-catching such as a new outfit.
Perhaps you’re feeling “delulu” over these new words? “Delulu” is short for delusional, meaning something you find to be unbelievable or untrue. It’s left you speechless.
Another word that entered the dictionary this year ties in with the wealthy and powerful spotted at Donald Trump’s Presidential Inauguration earlier this year. “Broligarchy” is defined as a small group of very wealthy men who want to wield significant political influence. “Inspo” made it into the book of words, which is defined as inspiring something new especially when posted on the internet. It’s also shorthand for “inspiration.”
“Work Wife” or “Work Spouse” were also among the 6000 new words added to this year’s Cambridge Dictionary. Later this year many dictionaries will be releasing their word of the year lists which is a reflection of the most searched for, or most used, words over the past year.
