Canada’s tornado season has been relatively quiet compared to previous years. According to experts at the Weather Network, the months of June, July, and August are the most common for tornadoes across the country, however it’s not uncommon for twisters to appear in April or as late as November in some provinces.
The latest count for tornadoes is 39 in Canada compared to last year which had 91 reports at this time. Despite the lower number, figures from the Weather Network indicate the number of twisters is actually up in Saskatchewan, reaching 17 confirmed touchdowns compared to the average of 14.
Unlike Saskatchewan, both Manitoba and Alberta have seen less tornadoes this summer compared to previous years. Typically, Alberta sees about 11 tornadoes but only six have been confirmed while Manitoba has seen five twisters, down from the average of six. One tornado has been confirmed in BC this summer.
The Weather Network says Ontario has seen significantly less tornadoes this summer reaching six compared to the average of 18. While the tornado sightings may be less in Canada, there have been a significant number reported in the United States where 1100 have already been spotted.
