With students and teachers heading back into classrooms, Saskatchewan RCMP are reminding families and drivers to take extra care as the school year begins.
Police say the start of September always brings busier school zones, crosswalks and drop-off areas, and everyone has a role to play in keeping children safe.
“Extra caution can go a long way – especially when watching for children who may be learning to navigate busy roads or finding their bus for the first time. Your attention and care can help make the start of the school year safe and positive for everyone,” said Staff Sgt. Jill McLaren, who leads Saskatchewan RCMP’s Community Safety and Wellbeing Unit.
Parents and caregivers are encouraged to review safety basics with their kids, including how to cross the road, avoid distractions and follow school bus rules.
Officers note children should only cross at marked crosswalks, make eye contact with drivers before stepping out, and stay in front of the bus so they remain visible to the driver.
For those biking or scootering to class, RCMP stress the importance of a Canadian Standards Association–approved helmet and obeying traffic signs. They also recommend installing a horn or bell so young riders can alert others when needed.
Drivers are reminded to slow down in school zones, yield to children, and stop when school bus arms are extended.
