The First Nations University of Canada (FNUniv) has officially opened its new Career Centre on Sept. 4.
The centre will help students with employment, internships, resumes, and more.
“This Career Centre will be a bridge between the university and the workforce,” said FNUniv president Dr. Jacqueline Ottmann.
Ottmann believes the centre will help inspire students and give them confidence.
“[This] will encourage students in embracing their next steps, their path forward.”
The Career Centre will offer job postings from all FNUniv campuses, which include those offered at the university and those externally.
Opening the centre was made possible through a three-year, $390,000 investment from the Co-operators.
“[This is about] helping students and making a connection to the First Nations University, but ultimately it’s also helping us get a footprint with the university so we can have more skilled workers,” said Alec Blundell, executive vice-president and chief operating officer of Co-operators.
Blundell said the company plans to hire three students from the university each year as part of their partnership.
Ottmann mentioned both federal and provincial governments, along with Indigenous organizations, have also shown interest in hiring FNUniv students.
Callie Morris, general manager of the centre, said the success of the new space will depend on its relationship with students.
“Honestly, even if [only] one person would benefit from it, I view that as a win,” she said.
The centre is located on the top floor of the FNUniv’s Regina campus.
