A beautiful Sunday afternoon had only one hold up and that was the variety of road restrictions around the city. This did not hamper the enthusiasm of the participants in the #WalkofHope for Ovarian Cancer Canada. A big thank you has to be sent to the organizing committee, who for the second time secured Miller Comp High School as the hub of the event. The energy of the committee and the anticipation of those attending had the room buzzing. The Regina Riot have long been supporters of this event and are a huge part of making the event move along smoothly from the food and refreshments to helping with first-aid, and the raffle wrap up. Many wonderful community members helped by donating items for the Raffle Table. The gift of unique Hillberg & Berk Teal Sparkle earrings was a highlight. Participants came from Ontario, Manitoba and throughout southern Saskatchewan.
As this event unfolds year after year members of the Ovarian Cancer Teal Sisters remain strong and supportive to newly diagnosed women. Cancer has no limitations to age. No limitation to how long the battle might be. Brenda Tunstead told her survivor story and the journey she remains on. Today, we think of Brenda as she was set to go into have a treatment done. Sheer determination and the “not today” mentality is what carries the Teal Sisters through. There are so many stories in this Walk of Hope group that will set you back on your heels. Consider the information provided; 3,000 women will be newly diagnosed in Canada each year. Survival rates have not changed in over 60 years.
Canadian and provincial governments are not motivated to make a priority of women’s health when it comes to this form of cancer. Therefore, the Ovarian Cancer Canada organization uses the money raised through the Walk of Hope to help fund research and offer 1:1 support to women. Walking hand in hand with the medical community helping to educate professionals on signs for early detection and information. And for those reasons alone, it is important to support this walk in September.
Fund raising is open until the end of the month. Donating on line is easy and safe. 2025 Walk of Hope – Ovarian Cancer Canada
