SWIFT CURRENT – Former Swift Current high school teacher Kara Braun may have her teaching certificate revoked after pleading guilty to sexual exploitation of a young person.
The Saskatchewan Professional Teacher’s Regulatory Board (SPTRB) held a hearing on Aug. 20. Markus Rubrecht, registrar and COO of SPTRB, said in an email that the decision will be made public and posted once the 30-day period for bringing an appeal has expired and no appeal has been brought forward.
According to court documents obtained from Swift Current Provincial Court, Braun, now 38, was arrested and charged on April 26, 2024. She pleaded guilty on Jan. 8 to a charge of while being in a position of trust or authority, for a sexual purpose invited, a male youth to touch her. A second charge of sexual assault was stayed.
Judge A. F. Jacobson sentenced her to a 90-day intermittent jail sentence to be served from Sunday to Wednesday at White Birch Remand Centre located at Regina's Paul Dojack Youth Centre until June 25.
Braun was also given 12 months of probation and ordered to provide her DNA to the National DNA Data Bank of Canada.
