REGINA — The University of Regina (U of R) is facing significant revenue losses from changes to Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) processing.
Last Thursday, U of R president Dr. Jeff Keshen estimated the school has lost approximately $10 million in revenue from a drop in international student enrolment.
“[This] will hurt [us]. There’s no doubt about it, and it’s not a secret among this institution.”
From this, overall enrolment at the university has dropped from 17,400 in 2024 to 16,700 in 2025, despite the school seeing a near 2 per cent increase in domestic enrolment year-over-year.
Other local Saskatchewan post-secondary schools have also been impacted by IRCC changes.
Sask. Polytechnic has laid off around 40 staff since April due to a shortfall of roughly $15 million in their budget.
As for the U of R laying off workers, Keshen made no mention of it.
Overall, Keshen said IRCC “has to do a better job” as universities and colleges “are not satisfied with what’s going on.”
