SASKATOON — Friday morning accident south of Saskatoon left one person dead and the other one seriously injured.
Saskatoon RCMP said they received a report of the crash at about 7:15 a.m. on Sept. 12. Officers, along with local fire crews and EMS, responded immediately.
RCMP said investigation determined two minivans were involved in the collision. The 48-year-old woman driving one of the vehicles was declared dead at the scene by EMS. She was from a community in southeast Saskatchewan. Her family has been notified.
The driver of the second minivan, an adult man, was taken to hospital with what police described as serious injuries. There were no passengers in either vehicle.
Highway 219 was closed during the initial investigation but has since reopened. A Saskatchewan RCMP collision reconstructionist is assisting with the investigation, which remains ongoing.
The collision happened as heavy fog blanketed the Saskatoon area Friday morning, reducing visibility to near zero in some places. Conditions improved around 10 a.m., but both lanes of the highway had remained closed until later in the day.
Earlier in the morning, a SaskToday reporter at the scene observed two SUVs involved in the collision, both of which appeared undrivable. Multiple RCMP vehicles were on site, and officers were using drones to survey the crash area.
Saskatoon Fire Department crews blocked traffic from both directions, checked both vehicles and determined extrication was needed to remove one patient from a Grand Caravan.
RCMP also reported other collisions in the province amid the fog, including a three-vehicle crash south of Nipawin. Police urged motorists to slow down, follow the instructions of emergency personnel and check the Highway Hotline for updates.
