REGINA — The Colliers Cup in Regina brought 20 street hockey teams all for a good cause.
On Thursday, teams comprised of different organizations gathered along Scarth Street to play 3-on-3 games to raise money for the Canadian Mental Health Association (CMHA).
“[This] is a round robin tournament style,” said Cindy Covey, senior property manager with Colliders. “Then of course we will start playoffs and then [also] every year we always have the Regina Police Service [face off] against the [Regina] Fire department.”
Covey said the cup has been going on for three years now and has raised more money after each event.
“The first year, we raised $45,000. Last year we raised $65,000. And our announcement here is going to say over $70,000.”
Each team participating pays a fee to compete, and the event also sells off 50/50 raffle tickets.
The roughly $70,000 will help fund the CMHA Regina’s chapter’s capital project.
“They have a massive ongoing project because their building on Albert and 11th Avenue is a little bit older.”
Covey believes this money can help support a new roof and or new windows for the building.
Previously, the event started as a grand prix at SkyPark Regina, but Covey said circumstances prevented Colliers from hosting more charitable races.
Along with Regina, the Colliers Cup took place in Saskatoon last week.
“Their office raised $70,000 last Friday. So, we’ve raised over $140,000 in a week for two charities,” she said.
Saskatoon’s money will go towards Haven Kids’ House, a temporary home for children when their families are in need.
Looking ahead to next year’s tournament, Covey encouraged any non-profit working on a capital project to reach out for the fundraiser.
