Trump set to address UN General Assembly
U.S. President Donald Trump is expected to chastise American allies, including Canada, for a co-ordinated international effort to recognize a Palestinian state in his address at the United Nations General Assembly on Tuesday morning.
Canada joined the United Kingdom, Australia and Portugal on Sunday in recognizing an independent Palestinian state before world leaders arrived in New York City for this week’s 80th Session of the general assembly.
President Emmanuel Macron announced France would also recognize Palestinian statehood during a high-profile meeting at the general assembly Monday. Andorra, Belgium, Luxembourg, Malta and Monaco added their voices to the chorus — announcing or confirming their recognition of a Palestinian state.
Prime Minister Mark Carney told world leaders during Monday’s meeting that the Israeli government is “working methodically to prevent the prospect of a Palestinian state from ever being established.”
Gun-control group urges Ottawa to ban SKS rifle
A prominent gun-control group says the federal government’s buyback of assault-style firearms will be a waste of money unless it includes a prohibition of the semi-automatic SKS rifle.
Since May 2020, Ottawa has outlawed approximately 2,500 types of guns on the basis they belong on the battlefield, not in the hands of hunters or sport shooters.
The government says a federal buyback program will provide owners fair compensation for their outlawed firearms, with the latest details to be announced Tuesday.
However, the government has not outlawed the SKS, which is commonly used in Indigenous communities to hunt for food.
TikTok privacy probe results to be released
Federal and provincial privacy authorities will release the results of their joint investigation into TikTok today.
They are set to hold a news conference in Ottawa at 1 p.m. E.T. to outline the results of the investigation, which was launched in 2023.
They looked into whether TikTok complies with Canadian privacy legislation and whether “valid and meaningful” consent is being obtained for the collection, use and disclosure of personal information.
The watchdogs also investigated whether the company is meeting transparency obligations and looked at how TikTok’s privacy practices apply to children and youths.
Last year, the federal government ordered the dissolution of TikTok’s Canadian business following a national security review of ByteDance, the Chinese company behind the social media platform.
Navy could operate subs from two suppliers
Vice-Admiral Angus Topshee says the Royal Canadian Navy could end up with submarines supplied by both companies vying for Ottawa’s lucrative sub procurement contract — and there could be advantages to diversifying the fleet.
Topshee also says the simplest solution would be to operate 12 submarines from just one supplier, which would ensure all the parts and weapons systems are the same.
Topshee did not express a preference either way in a recent interview with The Canadian Press, saying it’s ultimately up to the federal government to decide.
Some defence experts warn that splitting the contract between two bidders would introduce complications for the navy and likely would eliminate any domestic industrial benefits that could come from a single contract.
Ottawa has narrowed the field from five down to two finalists: South Korea’s Hanwha and Germany’s ThyssenKrupp Marine Systems.
B.C. ostrich farmers must leave or face arrest
The owners of an ostrich farm, whose flock is subject to a cull order, must leave today or face removal by police called in by the Canadian Food Inspection Agency.
RCMP and CFIA officials arrived Monday and served a warrant on the farm in southeastern British Columbia, where the owners have been fighting the cull order prompted by an outbreak of avian influenza that went on to kill 69 ostriches.
Katie Pasitney, whose mother is a co-owner of Universal Ostrich Farms, posted a video to her Facebook page Monday evening showing a CFIA official telling the farmers they would be allowed to stay in the birds’ pen overnight.
However, the unnamed man says the CFIA has control of the property and there would be “consequences” if the farmers did not leave voluntarily overnight or on Tuesday.
A tour of New Brunswick’s largest wildfire site
A lone black crow atop a charred spruce tree was one of the only signs of animal life visible last week along a stretch of what used to be a lush green forest in the northern part of New Brunswick.
Now, the area is dotted with blackened trunks and strewn with ash from the Oilfield Road fire, which scorched more than 14 square kilometres of land near Miramichi, N.B., since it began in early August. The fire was brought under control on Sept. 2, and is being monitored.
Provincial forest rangers and firefighters guided reporters on a tour of the site to survey the damage. They explained how they deployed 125 people, four excavators, and 11 bulldozers, among other pieces of heavy machinery, to contain the fire on the ground as planes pummeled the flames from the skies with retardants and water.
