ESTEVAN — The Estevan Police Service arrested people for violating release conditions and handled a couple of reported thefts in recent days.
An adult male and a youth were both arrested in separate incidents Sept. 24 for breaching their court-ordered release conditions by being out after curfew. The adult male was lodged in cells to attend court in the morning, while the youth was released to his parent with new court dates to speak to his original charges and the new breach offence.
Police were also called to a residence to conduct a well-being check. The person was found to be experiencing a mental health crisis and was transported to St. Joseph’s Hospital for further assessment and treatment.
A report of an attempted scam was received by the EPS. The intended victim did not lose any money or send personal information, so the matter has been referred to the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre. Suggestions were offered to prevent any further attempts to defraud the complainant.
EPS received a report of a theft of a dog. The owner identified a potential suspect. Members called the individual and the canine was returned to the rightful owner.
Several youths were identified as committing thefts at a west end convenience store. Due to call volumes, members were not immediately able to locate the individuals, but with additional assistance from the store owner, police made contact with the youths and their parents. The matter remains under investigation.
A youth was reported to have run away from home during his court-ordered curfew hours. He was initially located by his parents but ran off a second time. Members located and returned him while cautioning him that any additional attempts to be out past curfew would result in his arrest and detention in cells for breaching conditions. No further issues were reported.
A complaint was received of youths driving their vehicles erratically at a northeast business parking lot. Members attended but no offences were observed while police were on scene. Officers spoke with several youths regarding littering and cautioned them against aggressive driving and stunting.
A suspicious vehicle was reported to be operating in the Centennial area. Members located the vehicle and determined the occupants reside in the area.
A male known to police was arrested Sept. 23 while in possession of a youth’s bicycle that the EPS believed was stolen. He was lodged in cells while the investigation was ongoing. No further information was available.
EPS members attended to a pair of business intrusion alarms and an alarm at a local school. All three were false.
Members conducted traffic enforcement patrols in all local school zones during pick-up and drop-off times. Motorists were found to be in compliance with speed limits and traffic rules for these areas.
A complaint was filed for a diesel truck left running in the parking lot of a central hotel. Staff at the business identified the owner, who was directed to turn off the vehicle.
A hotel in the northeast area reported that a vehicle had backed into their building, causing damage, and then left the scene. Debris from the vehicle was located on-scene, including a licence plate, and the matter remains under investigation.
