REGINA – The Saskatchewan Serious Incident Response Team (SIRT) has launched a full investigation into a police-involved shooting that resulted in the death of a 22-year-old man in Regina on Sept. 25.
The incident occurred on Sept. 25 on the 3000 block of E Haughton Road where the man was fatally shot during a high-risk arrest operation carried out by the Regina Police Service (RPS). SIRT confirmed the launch of its investigation in a news release issued Monday.
According to SIRT, the man was wanted in connection with an ongoing domestic violence case. Due to prior concerning remarks attributed to the suspect, RPS requested the force’s Tactical Support Team to assist in the arrest.
Initial efforts to locate the man at a northwest Regina home were unsuccessful. Police later tracked him to the E Haughton Road address, where officers confirmed his presence and entered the home.
At about 11:07 p.m., there was a confrontation inside the residence between the man and members of RPS. SIRT reports that three Tactical Support Team Officers discharged their firearms, striking the suspect. RPS officers administered first-aid until paramedics arrived at 11:14 p.m. The man was pronounced deceased shortly after.
Following the notification, a SIRT team consisting of the Civilian Executive Director and six SIRT investigators deployed to Regina to begin their investigation. SIRT's investigation will examine the conduct of police during this incident, including the circumstances surrounding the man's death. A community liaison will also be appointed. RPS will maintain responsibility for the investigation that brought police into contact with the man.
SIRT said no further information will be released at this time and a final report will be issued to the public within 90 days of the investigation ending.
SIRT's mandate is to investigate alleged cases of serious injury, death, sexual assault or interpersonal violence arising from the actions or omissions of on and off-duty police officers, or while an individual is in police custody.
