WEYBURN – A Weyburn man is facing multiple charges, including uttering threats, after police were called to a disturbance at a downtown business on Wednesday.
According to Weyburn Police Service (WPS), officers responded to a call shortly after 2 p.m. on Sept. 25 to a commercial establishment on Main Street. Reports indicated an adult male was causing a significant disturbance on the premises.
When officers arrived, and after speaking with witnesses, investigators determined the situation was more serious than initially reported. Police say the individual not only caused a scene but also made direct threats to cause harm to the business owner and several employees.
The man was charged with uttering threats and two counts of breach of probation.
Busy week with 93 calls
WPS responded to 93 calls for service during the week of Sept. 21 through Sept. 28. The following is a summary of notable incidents from this period:
On Sept. 24, police received a report of a vehicle taken without the owner’s consent by an adult male known to the complainant through a past domestic relationship. Shortly after, police also received a report of a gas theft involving the same vehicle, with $182 in fuel stolen. Police have identified a male suspect and continue to search for both the vehicle and individual.
WPS say they are receiving increased complaints regarding illegal parking at local schools. Parents and guardians are reminded:
Do not park in front of yellow lines
Do not park between posted “No Parking” signs
The fine for illegal parking is $40, and tickets will be issued even if the driver remains inside the vehicle.
WPS responded to eight well-being and mental health-related calls during the week. Most incidents were resolved without further intervention; however, two individuals were transported to hospital for additional care.
Drug bust
A routine traffic stop just off Highway 39 turned into a significant drug bust on Sept. 21, resulting in the arrest of two men now facing numerous charges.
According to Weyburn Police Service (WPS), officers conducted a stop on a vehicle shortly after noon on Sept. 21. When they approached the vehicle, the officers reported observing a white substance, believed to be crystal methamphetamine, in plain view within the passenger compartment.
The discovery prompted a further search of the vehicle, leading the seizure of approximately 60 grams of methamphetamine, 7 grams of cocaine, ammunition, and a switchblade knife.
Both males were charged with possession for the purpose of trafficking methamphetamine, possession of cocaine, possession of a prohibited weapon, and breach of probation for possessing ammunition.
Both were remanded in custody for a future court appearance.
City brief – Touch a Truck Event
The City of Weyburn, Weyburn Police Service and Weyburn Fire Department are once again participating in the Family Place's 'Touch a Truck' event on Oct. 1 from 11 a.m. – 2 p.m. at the Barber Motors parking lot across from Boston Pizza.
“Letting kids and families explore the vehicles that keep Weyburn safe and running, and meet the people behind the wheel, helps build trust with our staff and maybe even sparks the interest of a future career in public service,” said WPS in a statement.
