Tuesday is National Truth and Reconciliation Day across Canada, a day to recognize and honour Indigenous people who were forced to go through the residential school system of Canada for many years. It’s also a day to listen and learn how the residential school system caused multigenerational trauma to Indigenous and Metis people. Many will be marking this somber day by wearing orange shirts, which was inspired by the story of Phyllis Jack Webstad who was forced to remove her orange shirt on her first day on residential school as a child.
National Truth and Reconciliation Day is a statutory holiday for all federal employees, provincial government employees in Nova Scotia and New Brunswick, and all workers in Manitoba, BC, PEI, Nunavut, Northwest Territories, and Yukon.
