YORKTON – Yorkton Mayor Aaron Kienle is in Ottawa this week as part of a Saskatchewan delegation pushing the federal government for stronger investment in municipal infrastructure and community development.
The meetings were coordinated by Government Relations Minister Eric Schmalz and Advanced Education Minister Ken Cheveldayoff and include municipal leaders from across the province.
Together they are calling for more predictable, cost-shared funding partnerships with Ottawa to help communities.
“This trip is about partnership and progress,” Kienle said. “Local communities know their needs best, but we can’t address them alone. By working hand-in-hand with provincial and federal leaders, we can build a stronger Canada, one where every community has the tools it needs to thrive.”
The group argue that federal funding for municipalities goes beyond fixing local problems. They say reliable infrastructure and healthy local economies are critical to job creation, public health and affordability and help communities remain competitive across the country.
“When the federal government invests in municipalities, it’s investing in the future of the country,” Kienle said. “We want to ensure towns and cities like Yorkton, along with communities across Saskatchewan and Canada, have the resources to meet today’s challenges and prepare for tomorrow’s opportunities.”
The City of Yorkton credited Schmalz and Cheveldayoff for organizing the mission and helping municipalities present a united voice in Ottawa.
“I look forward to sharing what we’ve learned and the progress we’ve made with Yorkton’s residents,” Kienle said. “Their voices and their needs are what drive this work, and it’s important they know we’re committed to keeping them informed as we pursue solutions together.”
