Major League Baseball is well into the post season now and baseball fever has hit Canadians from coast to coast as the Toronto Blue Jays make a push towards a spot in the World Series this fall. On Saturday, the Blue Jays got their first post season win since 2016 and then got another win over the New York Yankees on Sunday. Sell out crowds of over 44,000 at Rogers Centre made for a very noisy ballpark.
Off the field, Rogers Sportsnet is the biggest winner with millions tuning in this past weekend as the Blue Jays took a 2-0 series lead against the Yankees. On average, 3.6 million people tuned in for the game on Saturday and approximately 3.5 million tuned in for Sunday’s commanding 13-7 win by the Blue Jays. Blue Jays fans were treated to several home run hits including Vladimir Guerrero Jr.’s grand slam and the incredible pitching of rookie Trey Yesavage through the first five innings.
Rogers Sportsnet estimates 9.5 million people tuned in to the weekend games at some point, translating into one of the highest viewership’s for the sports network. Tonight’s game against the Yankees in New York has a 6:08pm Saskatchewan start time, meaning viewership numbers may be higher considering the game will be on during primetime.
Elsewhere around the league, the Brewers got a 7-3 win over the Cubs, taking a 2-0 series lead, while the Dodgers took a 2-0 series lead over the Phillies with a 4-3 win Monday evening. The other MLB game on the schedule today is an afternoon match between the Tigers and Mariners. That series is tied at a game a piece.
