Five hundred meals are being prepared for Souls Harbour Regina’s annual Thanksgiving dinner on Friday.
The meals include stuffing, mashed potatoes, gravy, veggies, pumpkin pie and whipped cream.
Kathy Ingram, Souls Harbour Regina director of finance and development, said they purchased roughly 50 turkeys from the Real Canadian Wholesale Club.
“You’re looking at $1,200 for purchasing all of them. So, we rely on our donors to provide funds so that we can purchase turkeys or to actually come and donate turkeys.”
On top of dozens of turkeys, Ingram said workers and volunteers will prepare 48-litres of gravy and turn 12 five-gallon pails of potatoes into mashed potatoes.
“People are always surprised at the quantities that we need to be able to feed 500 people. It takes a lot of work and a lot of effort to get a big meal like this off the ground and to feed everybody.”
Souls Harbour Regina has been working for the past three to four weeks to prepare for tomorrow’s feast.
“We had to start cooking turkeys, carving them [and] getting them ready to go. We freeze them once they’re ready to go, and then we’ll make sure everything is hot and ready.”
Ingram said volunteers have helped contribute roughly 10 hours a day to meal prep.
“It’s usually five to seven volunteers a day, and they come in for two hours usually to help us.”
Souls Harbour Regina is expecting 550 people to come to the dinner on Friday, but is prepared for more to show up.
“We do have leftovers from other meals that we’ve served this week to be able to back that up if we need to.”
The dinner is from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. at 1632 Angus Street.
