ESTEVAN — A motorist is facing a hefty fine after being stopped for speeding in the Estevan area.
According to the Estevan Police Service report for Oct. 11, a traffic stop was conducted on a vehicle tracked on radar to be travelling 173 kilometres an hour in a 100 km/h zone. A ticket with a $1,056 fine was issued and the vehicle was impounded due to the excessive speed.
In other recent police news, the EPS received a report Oct. 9 of a vehicle passing through the stop lights of a school bus. A vehicle description was provided and the matter is under investigation.
A barking dog led to an altercation between two neighbours that was reported to police. The matter remains under investigation.
A stolen vehicle investigation concluded with EPS members locating the vehicle and arresting the driver, who was known to the owner. The driver was subsequently charged with theft of a motor vehicle and was lodged in cells to appear in court the following morning.
A report was received of an erratic driver on Kensington Avenue. Members patrolled the area immediately after the report but were unable to locate the vehicle. The EPS said insufficient information was available to positively identify the vehicle or driver.
Police received a request for a well-being check on a resident after a neighbour observed a vehicle idling in the driveway of a home for several hours. Members attended, spoke with the owner of the vehicle and determined that no medical concerns existed.
A cyclist reported being struck by a vehicle. No injuries were sustained by the cyclist and police are obtaining statements to continue their investigation.
While on patrol, an EPS member observed a male cyclist proceeding through a red light at the intersection of Fifth Street and 13th Avenue. The officer stopped the cyclist, warned him of the negligent behaviour and advised him he could be issued a ticket under the Traffic Safety Act for such actions. The EPS reminds cyclists the rules of the road that apply to motorists also apply to those riding bicycles.
Police received a report Oct. 10 of mischief to property, in which a 13-year-old Estevan youth was identified as a suspect. According to the EPS, the youth subsequently caused a disturbance in east Estevan when he learned of the investigation. The youth was arrested, charged and released to the care of his parents.
The EPS and the Estevan Fire Rescue Service responded to a bush fire in the alley on the south side of Smith Street. The fire was extinguished and is believed to have been caused by fireworks.
Police attended to an apartment complex in the Hillside area regarding a domestic disturbance in which threats were reportedly uttered. The apartment was checked and the male resident was spoken to about the complaint. An involved woman had fled prior to police arrival and was not immediately located.
EPS members located three women in the east end area who had been consuming alcohol while prohibited by court-ordered conditions. All three were arrested and transported to the police station, where they were processed and released with new court dates to speak to the charges.
Police received a report Oct. 11 of a suspicious man loitering at an ATM location several days in a row. Members attended and located the person, who is an Estevan resident. He was warned about his behaviour and directed to move along.
Police received a report of a disturbance at a Hillside apartment complex. Members attended but the individual left prior to police arrival.
The EPS received a second disturbance call, this time at a local business in the downtown area. The individual came to the police station on their own, was spoken to for a significant amount of time and connected to the EPS’s Police and Crisis Team.
The EPS received a report Oct. 12 of a downed power line in the 600-block of Fourth Street. Members attended and provided traffic control until SaskPower employees were able to attend to repair the damage.
A complaint of a domestic disturbance in central Estevan was investigated during the night shift. As a result of the complaint, a man was arrested for assault but was released without charge upon the conclusion of the investigation.
Staff at a local motel reported that a woman refused to leave when asked to do so. EPS members attended and the woman departed without issue.
A fuel theft was reported from a west-end service station Oct. 13. A patron drove away without paying for the fuel. The matter remains under investigation.
EPS members attended to two separate domestic disturbances reported at the same location in the east end. Each altercation was determined to be verbal, and during the second interaction, one of the parties left the residence for the evening.
The EPS says its members attended to 61 calls for service during the Thanksgiving long weekend.
