Numerous reports and eyewitness accounts have surfaced online of a possible earthquake shaking up residents in the Esterhazy area over the Thanksgiving long weekend.
According to residents, the ground started to shake late Sunday evening causing beds to shake, cupboard doors to open, and shelves to rattle.
“It was like somebody picked up our bed and shook it,” explained Esterhazy resident Tracey Bomboir who, along with her boyfriend, was getting ready to go to sleep for the night. “It was crazy. We jumped right up and there was a rumbling noise.”
This isn’t the first time tremors and small earthquakes have been felt in Esterhazy. Earthquakes Canada confirmed a 3.3 magnitude quake struck Esterhazy on August 2nd about five kilometers northeast of the community with no major damage reported. It’s believed the August tremors were related to mining activities in the area.
“This time, when we got up, we jumped up, the dog was racing around and she was scared, and there were things like cupboard doors opened, things had fallen over on cupboards, described Bomboir. “There was stuff in the tub that had fallen off the shelf and different things had moved all over the house.”
Bomboir was home when the August earthquake hit the area but said nothing had moved in the house like this most recent incident. According to Earthquakes Canada, Sunday’s shaker measured 3.7 on the Richter Scale and occurred 18 kilometers north-northeast of Esterhazy.
“It freaked both of us out, it took us a long time to go back to sleep,” concluded Bomboir.
