This is the time of year when grocery and department stores have huge sales on boxes and bags of candy just before Halloween arrives, which is one of the most lucrative times for stores. Many will buy candy in preparation of the spooky season only to realize they’re eating it too early creating another trip to the store to get more.
According to dental experts from the American Association of Endodontists, the worst Halloween candy on our teeth are usually sticky, sour, or hard. These usually include candy like Lollipops, suckers, Sour Patch Kids, taffy, and Tootsie Rolls. In the case of sour candies, they often contain acids and sugars that can damage tooth enamel, leading to a higher risk of decay. Sticky and soft candy, like caramel taffy, can often get lodged into tooth crevices, creating cavities, while hard candies exposes teeth to sugars for longer periods of time.
Experts at the American Association of Endodontist do have recommendations for those who still want to enjoy the occasional Tootsie Roll. They say to eat candy after meals when there is more saliva in the mouth to help break down acids, wash away any candy residue by drinking water, and wait up to 30 minutes before brushing teeth.
Of course, it’s always a good idea to stay up-to-date on your dental appointments.
