MOOSE JAW — A Moose Jaw RCMP officer has been charged with criminal offences following a months-long investigation into an on-duty altercation earlier this year.
Const. Steven Sharpen was arrested on Oct. 29 and faces charges of break and enter and assault. The charges stem from an incident that occurred on Jan. 13, when RCMP officers went to a home in the Moose Jaw detachment area as part of an ongoing investigation.
According to police, Sharpen is accused of unlawfully entering the home and engaging in an altercation with a man inside. The man filed a complaint with the RCMP the following day. No physical injuries were reported.
Saskatchewan RCMP initiated an investigation into the complaint. The results of the investigation were sent to Crown for their assessment on Feb. 13.
As required by The Police Act, 1990, Saskatchewan RCMP notified the Saskatchewan Serious Incident Response Team (SIRT) of the altercation. SIRT determined the incident to be out of the scope of their mandate.
Cst. Sharpen is scheduled to appear in Moose Jaw Provincial Court on Dec. 3
