The City of Melville’s proposal to expand its boundaries took center stage during a public hearing Monday night at City Hall.
The plan calls for the annexation of several parcels of land and adjoining roadways from the Rural Municipality of Cana, covering areas in Townships 22 and 23, Range 6 — including parts of Range Roads 2062 and 2063, and Township Roads 230 and 231.
City officials say the expansion would support long-term growth, improve service delivery, and bring major infrastructure — including the new landfill, expanded wastewater treatment plant, and municipal airport — under city jurisdiction.
Residents were given the chance to share their views, with written objections also accepted ahead of the meeting. Representatives from the R.M. of Cana voiced opposition, arguing the City has not demonstrated an immediate need for the lands and calling the proposal “an overreach and ill-founded.” The R.M. said it remains open to collaboration on long-term growth but believes the current plan does not justify annexation.
Mayor Joe Kirwan says the next step will likely be a joint meeting between City and R.M. councils, possibly with a mediator, to help both sides reach a better understanding.
