REGINA – Ground has been broken for a new fire hall located in the southeast of Regina.
Construction will begin next month on Fire Station No. 8, located on 5051 E Primrose Green Dr. at Chuka Blvd.
Fire officials say this new location will improve response times and strengthen safety for area residents. Fire Chief Layne Jackson said it will be a three bay station staffed with one crew of four, and have a frontline pumping apparatus and some other apparatus.
But it will also serve as a multipurpose community space for public use and rental, and feature a “big blue bin” for recycling accessibility. It will also have a public washroom. It’s expected the new fire station will be open in early 2027.
It has been 25 years since the fire department has grown in coverage, according to Jackson. He said this new fire station had been in discussion since about 2019-20, when the study for the fire master plan took place.
Right now, Jackson said, the far southeast area is covered by Station No. 5 which is located near the Victoria Square Mall. Travel times are quite significant now, he said.
“One this station comes online, we’re going to redesign our fire station districts and of course it’s going to take over this further southeast portion of it in the Creeks, and work all the way down to Costco and the new development.”
In his remarks at the sod turning Jackson said the city, and the southeast itself, has grown significantly.
“As the community has grown we have carefully measured its needs and plans so that our department will grow along with the city. Fire Station No. 8 will support our all-hazards 24-7 response capabilities from fires, emergency medical, hazardous materials, technical rescue and our very important prevention programs. And this location at Chuka Blvd, and Primrose Green Dr. will ensure we are meeting response times in the southeast of Regina beyond emergency response.”
“This is an incredibly important and meaningful project, it’s the beginning of a promise fulfilled to the people of our city, especially those growing southeast communities,” said Mayor Chad Bachynski.
“Regina is expanding. Families are putting down roots, businesses are thriving, and neighbourhoods like this one are becoming vibrant hubs of community life. With that growth comes responsibility — responsibility to ensure that our public services keep pace, that our infrastructure as reliable and reflects our values and that every resident feel safe supported and protected. Fire Station 8 is a direct investment in that vision. It’s a product of thoughtful, proactive planning guided by our master plan and our broader commitment to building a resilient, inclusive and sustainable Regina. This station will enhance emergency response times, improve coverage and provide peace of mind to thousands of residents of our city.”
