Nothing like the bagpipes to grab one’s attention and they did just that in Melbourne, Australia as hundreds of pipers entered the Australian record book in honour of the late Bon Scott.
374 pipers gathered together in Federation Square in Melbourne to belt out AC/DC’s “It’s a long way to the Top (If You Wanna Rock ‘n’ Roll)” smashing the 2012 Bulgarian record of 333 bagpipers. The oldest piper was 98 years old, as participants and spectators of all ages packed the square to see bagpiping history unfold. Not just Australians attended the event, either. AC/DC fans in their favourite band shirts along with bagpipe lovers from across North America and Europe also joined in on the fun.
The record has officially been entered into the Australian Record book but officials at Guinness World Records claim nobody approached them to witness the attempt. Once the record and the song was complete, pipers broke into “Happy Birthday” followed by “Amazing Grace,” which sparked a loud round of applause from the crowd.
Bon Scott was the second lead vocalist of the rock group founded by brothers Angus and Malcolm Young, Colin Burgess, Larry Van Kriedt, and Dale Evans (first vocalist). Scott died in February of 1980 at the age of 33 due to acute alcohol poisoning. Not long after his death, Brian Johnson was recruited as the next lead singer of the band, a position he still holds today.
As you can see from this 9News clip from Australia, it was a very noisy crowd.
