The Saskatchewan Roughriders will face the Montreal Alouettes on Sunday afternoon in the 112th Grey Cup.
The green and white haven’t played in the CFL championship game since 2013. Saskatoon-native and long snapper Jorgen Hus is the longest serving Riders player and says being at the Grey Cup means a lot to the Saskatchewan boys on the team.
“Finally. I mean, finally got here. Been a long time coming. Been dreaming about this day, obviously, since I was a little kid. Started playing football. To play for your home province means a lot, obviously. And then, to get to this game means so much more. We've been trying for so many years. Come close. But, you know, with this group, I never felt better about getting to this game. Hopefully, we can just keep it going, and Sunday is a good day for us.”
Hus recalls the last time the Riders were in the Grey Cup at home in 2013.
“I definitely watched it, and I had some buddies playing on the team. I was obviously cheering them on, and being from the province, I was obviously pulling for them. I was just excited for them. I always knew that at some point I'd be in this league and hopefully one day experience those moments with them. They had a dominant win that day. So hopefully we can do the same.”
The 36-year-old Hus knows why football is important in Saskatchewan.
“We have great coaches right from the grassroots level. They teach you the right things right from the start. And it's obviously important to us. It just starts at the grassroots. And I've been very fortunate to have great coaching all the way up.”
You can hear the 112th Grey Cup across the 620 CKRM Cooperators Rider broadcast network starting Sunday at 2 p.m.
