SASKATOON — Talk around Saskatoon sports circles showed that there may be a sense of general apathy regarding the Riders appearance in this year’s Grey Cup Championship. However, these Saskatoon fans say they don’t buy that notion
Rob and Deanna Schmidt say, “I don't believe that actually. Quite a few of our neighbours went to games this year, and the lineup at the police checkpoint at Chamberlain on Labour Day can mean a 45-minute wait. So, I think lots of Saskatoon people love the Riders.”
Schmidt says she has had her dad’s season tickets, which he owned since 1962. The couple has attended two Grey Cups including 2013, which she considers one of her best days ever.
“We love meeting with family and friends at the game – great camaraderie. Also, the anticipation as the Riders are about to enter the field, the fireworks and high fives after a touchdown, the outlandish watermelon heads, the crisp autumn air, the absolute jubilation after a win, one huge voice as 30,000 fans sing Green Is the Colour, the history and pride that we fans share.”
The couple attests that there are many reasons to love the Riders, and quite simply, because it is so much fun.
The Saskatoon couple braved the temperatures to cheer on their team at Mosaic Stadium Nov. 8 for the West Final. They are gathering their entire family to host a Grey Cup party at their house, as Rider Pride runs deep amongst them.
Another fan recalls family friends gathering in the late 70’s and early 80’s around an 18-inch grainy television watching games. Now families like the Schmidts can enjoy a big, flat screen TV experience cheering on their favourite team.
While many young football fans have gravitated towards the NFL, largely due to Fantasy Football engagement, there are Saskatoon fans that say they were focused on the Huskies winning their Mitchell Bowl championship, Nov. 8, before turning their attention to the Riders in the Grey Cup
A number of Saskatoon establishments are hosting Grey Cup watch parties on Nov. 16 and it is likely 8th Street and Saskatoon police will once again be prepared for the celebrations should the Riders win the coveted Grey Cup.
