LLOYDMINSTER — A Saskatchewan RCMP officer has been arrested and charged with breach of trust in connection with the death of a 68-year-old man near Lloydminster last year.
The Serious Incident Response Team (SIRT) said the officer was arrested on Nov. 13 and released on an undertaking to appear in Lloydminster Provincial Court on Dec. 11.
The charge is the result of a SIRT investigation into an incident on April 3, 2024. That morning, at 7:14 a.m., Maidstone RCMP received a call requesting a wellness check on a man after a relative had been told he was deceased. The call was dispatched to an on-call officer, but no immediate response was conducted.
At approximately 4:30 p.m., the relative contacted RCMP again for an update. Nine minutes later, the original officer assigned to the case left the detachment.
At 5:01 p.m., a different relative who had gone to the rural property called police to report the man was seriously injured but alive. RCMP officers arrived shortly after and the man was taken to hospital by EMS, where he later died.
SIRT started its investigation that evening, deploying its civilian executive director and five SIRT investigators. Over the following months, investigators interviewed RCMP members and civilian witnesses and collected audio, video and documentary evidence. One officer was the subject of the investigation and five others were considered witness officers. Six civilian witnesses were interviewed.
The completed investigation was submitted to the Attorney General’s office in December 2024. In October, the Attorney General’s office provided correspondence to SIRT, leading to the officer’s arrest the next month.
