WEYBURN — A Saskatchewan woman has been denied bail after she was arrested on drug charges for the second time.
Candace Saige Montgomery was in Weyburn Provincial Court Nov. 20 for a show-cause hearing. After the Crown prosecutors and Montgomery’s defence attorney made their cases, Judge Douglas Kovatch ruled that Montgomery should remain in custody.
The evidence and arguments from the attorneys, as well as the judge’s reasons for denying bail, are covered by a publication ban.
According to information from the Estevan Police Service, its Drug Intelligence Unit arrested Montgomery Oct. 29 after executing a search warrant at an Estevan residence. She was charged under the Controlled Drugs and Substances Act with trafficking methamphetamine and possession of methamphetamine for the purpose of trafficking.
Montgomery has been in custody since her arrest in October.
Courthouse records indicate she was previously charged in Regina with one count each of possession for the purpose of trafficking cocaine and fentanyl, and another count of possession of the proceeds of crime under $5,000, stemming from an arrest in May. Montgomery also has single charges of theft under $5,000 and assault with a weapon, and four charges of failing to comply with release conditions.
Montgomery will appear in court in Regina on Nov. 25 to speak to her charges from that city, and in Estevan on Dec. 1 to speak to the other matters.
