Lieutenant Governor Bernadette McIntyre burned the brand to officially kick-off the 54th annual Canadian Western Agribition in Regina.
A video of her burning the brand can be found at the bottom of this article.
McIntyre told reporters afterward while she has volunteered at every single Agribition in various roles, she never expected to get the opportunity to burn the brand.
“I was so excited because I’ve been seeing people do this for decades, and when Shaun (Kindopp) called me and said ‘the board would like you to burn the brand’ and I go, ‘really?'” McIntyre said. “I never ever dreamed I’d get to burn the brand at Agribition.”
McIntyre said the occasion Monday morning was her first time using a brand, adding the finished product may have appeared lighter compared to the one from Saskatchewan Roughriders Head Coach Corey Mace, who did it at last year’s Agribition.
“I can’t say that I’ve branded before but I was getting lots of coaching hints and of course I’m a little smaller than coach Mace, so maybe had a little softer touch,” she said, adding she will eventually get to keep the brand as a souvenir.
As far as what Agribition means to her, McIntyre said it’s a great opportunity to showcase the best of what of what Saskatchewan has to offer.
“I think that sometimes we don’t celebrate ourselves enough in Saskatchewan and in rural Saskatchewan, we are world class and this week just shows it off for the whole country and the whole world.”
Also on hand for the burning of the brand was Federal Agriculture Minister Heath McDonald, Provincial Agriculture Minister Daryl Harrison and Regina Mayor Chad Bachynski.
