REGINA — Saskatchewan health officials have issued an urgent drug alert after three people died in Regina within 24 hours from suspected illegal drugs possibly sold as fentanyl or gabapentin.
According to information released Thursday by the Ministry of Health, naloxone was administered multiple times in all three cases but did not prevent the deaths. Officials warn naloxone reverses opioid effects but does not counter drugs such as methamphetamine or benzodiazepines, which may be circulating in the city.
Emergency responders in Regina have attended more than 100 suspected overdose calls so far in November, including incidents involving unconsciousness, cardiac arrest, hospital intervention and additional deaths.
On Nov. 21, the Newo Yotina Friendship Centre conducted drug checking and identified a sample containing a concerning combination of fentanyl and benzodiazepines. It has not been confirmed whether that substance contributed to the recent spike in overdoses.
Paraphernalia found at recent scenes suggests the drugs were likely smoked. Officials say users believed they were purchasing fentanyl or gabapentin, but toxic substances of unknown composition may be present.
The Ministry of Health says the incidents signal a heightened risk of overdose and death in the Regina area. The alert will remain in effect until Dec. 4.
