REGINA — The Regina Humane Society (RHS) is hosting a Christmas event filled with fun and joy on Saturday.
From 1 p.m. until 3 p.m., people can attend the Home for the Holiday Open House at 4900 Parliament Avenue.
“We've got a sing-along with the Milestone School special events choir, they're gonna be here singing songs of the season. We've got hot chocolate and some cookies, we've got games and activities, a scavenger hunt, something for the whole family to do,” said Bill Thorn, director of marketing and public relations at the RHS.
Some activities include spending time with pets and giving them essential items.
“It can be some treats or some food, some toys, that kind of thing that will make sure that they have during the holiday season.”
Before this week started, the RHS had 180 animals in care.
Thorn said they’re hoping this event will reduce the strain they face during this time.
“This can be a difficult time of year because, quite naturally, people are starting to think of the holidays and travel and Christmas shopping and that kind of thing. So we do see a bit of a slowdown [in adoptions].”
So far, 22 animals have been adopted alone this week.
The RHS also reduces adoption fees a handful of times throughout the year, which Thorn said has a financial impact.
“[So], if we get into a tight situation again, we might see that. But we hope not. And we hope people will still come and consider bringing a pet into their home.”
Despite Christmas being a slow time for adoptions, Thorn also noted that winter months tend to be slower for intake.
“It's a time of year when people aren't going outside quite as much. They tend not to let a cat out, for example, in the winter months as they might in the summer.”
