KELVINGTON — The Kelvington community marked a major milestone this week as students, school officials and local leaders gathered to celebrate the opening of the community’s modernized K-12 school.
Education Minister Everett Hindley said the upgrades reflect the province’s long-term commitment to improving learning environments across Saskatchewan.
“Investing in schools means investing in the future of our communities,” Hindley said in a statement. “The significant upgrades at Kelvington School have transformed the facility into a modern K-12 learning environment that will serve students and families in the area, giving Saskatchewan students their best start for many years to come.”
The province spent more than $5.9 million to consolidate Robert Melrose Elementary School into Kelvington High School and complete a range of renovations across the building.
The work included a new main entrance and front office area, updated science labs and breakout learning spaces, and changes to corridors, washrooms, lockers and lighting. The project also added new outdoor play areas and improved parking and bus drop-off zones.
Horizon School Division Board of Education chair Linda Mattock said the renewal marks a long-anticipated chapter for the region.
“Bringing our K-12 learners together in a modern, shared space will benefit learners for generations,” Mattock said. “We sincerely thank the Government of Saskatchewan and all partners who supported this important investment in our children's future.”
According to the province, roughly $2.8 billion has been committed to school infrastructure since 2008, including 74 new schools, 31 major renovations and 10 smaller projects.
