REGINA — The City of Regina has wrapped up its construction season with a major road re-opening.
On Monday, Mayor Chad Bachynski and city administration held a press conference to announce the reopening of Dewdney Avenue.
“This project has been one of the most significant infrastructure investments in Regina's recent history, and it represents a commitment to building a more connected and vibrant community,” said Bachynski.
For the past two years, Dewdney Avenue had been under construction as part of a $32-million revitalization project.
Construction crews worked late weekdays and additionally on weekends to install new pavement, increase lighting, widen sidewalks, and replace aging infrastructure.
“The underground investments will ensure that this vital corridor can serve residents, businesses and visitors for decades to come,” said Bachynski.
He also highlighted the city’s plan to develop The Yards, an empty space south of Dewdney Avenue.
City council will receive a report on Wednesday regarding partnering with a developer to bring residential properties to the area.
While Dewdney has reopened, the revitalization project won't be fully completed until 2026.
"There's some street furniture that we'll add next year, so benches, bike racks, those kinds of items," said Kurtis Doney, City of Regina, deputy city manager of city operations.
In total, the city spent approximately $244 million on construction projects this year, according to Doney.
Along with Dewdney, these investments went towards key projects, including the Albert Street North Overpass and the 11th Avenue Revitalization Project.
Doney said work on the southbound bridge for the overpass has been completed, while construction on the northbound bridge will occur in 2026.
As for the 11th Avenue Revitalization Project, Doney said it's over 50 per cent completed and spoke about the work ahead.
“We'll start working there primarily on the Lorne Street to [the] west in 2026, likely in early May, and we expect that to be completed by the end of 2026,” mentioned Doney.
