SASKATOON — A 16-year-old girl was arrested after she sprayed bear repellent at an officer and a police dog, then kicked the dog in the head early Tuesday morning.
At about 2:30 a.m. on Dec. 2, a Saskatoon Police Service Canine Unit officer patrolling near 20th Street West and Avenue F South observed a female discharge bear spray towards a male. When the officer activated the vehicle’s emergency equipment, the suspect fled.
A police service dog was released and chased her on foot. During the chase, the suspect discharged bear spray at the officer and the dog multiple times, causing them to suffer from its effects. The officer used a taser and the police dog apprehended the suspect.
As additional officers arrived, the suspect kicked the police dog in the head. The youth was arrested and taken to hospital for treatment of injuries consistent with a dog bite. Police say she gave a false identity to staff at the hospital.
She now faces charges of assault with a weapon, assaulting a police officer with a weapon, injuring a law enforcement animal, fraudulent impersonation, and breaching court-imposed conditions.
