Melville firefighters were called out early Thursday morning after reports of a house filling with smoke on the city’s west side.
Crews arrived around 2:13 a.m. to find an active fire burning in the home’s chimney. They were able to knock down the flames quickly and then ventilated the house to clear the smoke.
Firefighters stayed on scene for some time afterward to ensure there were no remaining hotspots.
Fire Officials say the swift response prevented the situation from becoming a much more serious incident.
