WEYBURN — A woman has been charged after an incident with members of the Weyburn Police Service (WPS).
Police responded to a local hotel Dec. 6 for what the WPS said was a report of a woman in distress. Upon arrival, officers determined the woman was heavily intoxicated and causing a disturbance among hotel guests. The WPS says she was arrested without incident but once in cells, she assaulted a police officer and uttered death threats.
She was charged and released the following day when sober and no longer considered a risk to the public.
In other recent police news, on Dec. 5, the WPS responded to a two-vehicle collision at the intersection of Third Street and Railway Avenue. An investigation determined that one driver proceeded when it was unsafe to do so and struck another vehicle in the intersection. Both vehicles’ required towing. According to the WPS, one driver was transported by Weyburn EMS to hospital with minor injuries.
Police attended a single-vehicle collision Dec. 4 in which a man lost control of his vehicle, went through a fence and struck the side of a residence. The vehicle was towed from the scene and the WPS said the driver sustained minor injuries. A standard field sobriety test (SFST) was conducted, resulting in a 21-day driver’s licence suspension, a seven-day vehicle impound and a ticket for driving without due care and attention.
On three separate occasions throughout the week, police responded to disturbances or suspicious person complaints involving intoxicated men. In each case, the individuals were arrested for public intoxication and placed in cells until sober. In one occurrence, the man was also found to have an outstanding warrant and was arrested accordingly.
Also, the WPS located and arrested a man without incident and later released him with conditions in connection with a previous incident. According to the WPS, officers were dispatched Nov. 26 to a domestic disturbance at a residence. The man had fled the scene before police arrived. According to the WPS, an investigation determined he assaulted a woman during an argument. An arrest warrant was issued.
The WPS says it responded for 70 calls for service from Dec. 1-7.
With the icy road and sidewalk conditions, the WPS reminds motorists to slow down and use caution while driving. Pedestrians are also urged to be vigilant, as vehicles may not be able to stop quickly at crosswalks due to road conditions.
