Everyone in Saskatchewan was breathing a sigh of relief after quarterback Trevor Harris re-signed with the Roughriders for one more season.
“They're committed to winning. I've always said, sometimes it's better to stay in a place where you're comfortable, stay in a place where you're winning, you know your surroundings, it's better to take less than to go to an unknown situation,” Durant said on the SportsCage.“If you lose in that unknown situation, your career could be shortened.”
It was reported by 3DownNation insider Justin Dunk that Harris took less money which allows the Riders more funds for their other free agents.
“I'm a big advocate for guys to stick together, try to win as many championships as you can, especially if you've shown that you have the team to do it. If you can keep the nucleus together, if everybody can take a small pay cut, you'll make enough money in the playoffs and in that Grey Cup game have more than enough for what you'll make going somewhere else,” Durant explained.
“I think it's a great job of Trevor taking a little bit less, trying to get some of these other guys signed.”
In 2025, Harris started 16 regular season games for the Green and White, he completed 73.5 percent of his passes for 4,549 yards , 24 touchdowns and 11 interceptions. He led the Riders to the 112th Grey Cup as the team beat the Montreal Alouettes 25-17 and No. 7 earned game MVP honours.
Meanwhile, Durant shared who he believes should re-sign with Saskatchewan since Harris is coming back for another season.
“I'd start with the secondary and make sure Tevaughn Campbell is signed. The guy tied for the league lead in interceptions. He's shown that he still has a lot of juice left,” Durant detailed.
“If a guy can run a 4.3 in his 20s, he can run a 4.44 in his 30s, so he's still showing that he can move. I look at the secondary and keep those guys together, Rolan Milligan Jr., getting those guys and that back end, it's so important to have that continuity back there.”
Before joining the Riders, Campbell was in the NFL from 2019 through 2024. The six-foot, 195-pound defensive back played 13 regular season games for Saskatchewan, recording 18 defensive tackles, one special team tackle, six interceptions and one he returned for a touchdown.
Durant elaborated on the defence and who the Roughriders should re-sign, he then switched to the offence and who the Riders should pay attention to.
“I'd start with the DBs and then I go to the receivers and look at this Canadian depth, get that back intact with [Samuel] Emilus and [Kian] Schaffer-Baker. I definitely go to the skilled positions,” Durant detailed.
“At offensive line, even though we had some guys up and Jermarcus Hardrick won the Offensive Lineman of the Year award, I think that, once you get those skilled position players locked in, then you know exactly what you're working with to tie up those front guys.”
Emilus played seven regular season games in 2025 while Schaffer-Baker played five. Statistically, Emilus caught 37 passes for 588 yards and two touchdowns. As for Schaffer-Baker, he caught 15 passes for 177 yards.
Harris was not the only quarterback to come back to Saskatchewan, Tommy Stevens also re-signed with the team on December 5, a two-year contract.
The CFL free agent communication period starts on February 1, 2026 and runs through February 8, where players will be allowed to talk to other teams. CFL free agency officially begins on Tuesday, February 10.
