PRINCE ALBERT – After more than five years of dedicated service, a distinguished member of the Prince Albert Police Service (PAPS) is hanging up his leash. Police Service Dog (PSD) Kal is officially entering retirement.
Born in Slovakia, Kal began his Canadian law enforcement career with the Medicine Hat Police Service before joining PAPS in 2019. He quickly became an invaluable asset to the force, partnering with his handler, Const. Brown.
“Kal helped serve our community by always stepping up where his expertise was needed,” the police force said in a social media announcement.
Kal’s primary role was with the Patrol Division, but his skills also aided major Prince Albert Police Service investigations, supporting the Major Crimes Unit (MCU), Emergency Response Team (ERT) and the Crime Reduction Team (CRT).
The bond between Kal and Const. Brown was forged over countless shifts and training exercises. The team attended various specialized training opportunities and tested their skills at the Canadian Police Canine Association Dog Trials on two occasions.
While known for his professional drive and readiness for duty, Kal is now set for a well-earned rest. His retirement plans, according to PAPS, include extensive games of fetch and chewing on his favourite Kong ball. In a fitting conclusion to their partnership, Const. Brown will officially adopt Kal, allowing the dog to enjoy a comfortable retirement in a familiar home.
“The Prince Albert Police Service and Const. Brown thanks Kal for all his hard work over the years, for keeping Const. Brown company on all the long night shifts, and for keeping him and our community safe,” said PAPS.
