REGINA — As winter rolls along, the need for clothing items is transparent for those most vulnerable.
This need has increased in 2025, as the Salvation Army Regina Community Church says they’re running low on winter gear.
“We've definitely seen an increase of community members coming in looking for warm items, so whether that's hats to scarves, socks, just something to keep warm,” said Lt. Tim Fraser of the Salvation Army Regina Community Church.
Fraser estimates upwards of 50 people come into the church daily looking for winter gear, which has spiked in 2024.
He emphasized how critical winter gear is for vulnerable residents, especially as Regina has experienced harsh winter conditions in recent weeks.
“When you're on the streets and cold, trying to make it day to day — sometimes hour to hour, minute by minute — having those basic necessities available is incredibly valuable.”
The community church has also seen a decline in donations this winter, which Fraser attributes to donor fatigue following the holiday season.
He said it can be difficult for people to think about giving after Christmas, even as many individuals experiencing homelessness continue to rely on services like the church’s.
Fraser added that community support remains critical, noting that stepping up to help one another is especially important, even when many people are struggling themselves.
Meanwhile, Carmichael Outreach is experiencing an increase in donations, which fundraising co-ordinator Janis Miller explained comes from partnerships.
“We're [now] really trying to connect with those donors and other community members for help.”
Along with increased donations, Miller said Carmichael Outreach is also experiencing a demand increase.
“People are just doing the best they can to get by, and it's pretty difficult to watch people in your community struggle as much as they are,” noted Miller.
While the community church is running low on donated items, Fraser says they’re redirecting people to the Salvation Army’s thrift stores in Regina, where people can pick out several items.
Fraser said the community church welcomes donations of winter gear and is accepting items that are brand new or in good condition.
During this week, the community church is open from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m., excluding New Year's Day, when it will be closed.
